Hayfields Reserve

Hayfields Farm consists of 1,034 acres situated in the valley between Jack Mountain and Bullpasture Mountain at an elevation ranging from 1,800 – 2,400 feet. The Bullpasture River flows through the property for just over one mile, sustaining a variety of wildlife and natural communities, including numerous threatened and endangered species. Two-thirds of the property is forested, with forty percent classified as possessing high conservation value by the Virginia Department of Forestry. Nearly 350 acres of the farm include prime soils or farmland of statewide importance, per the USDA-NRCS Soil Survey. Several ponds exist on site, mainly east of the river, as well as numerous buildings and structures including a picturesque single lane truss bridge.

Along the southeastern boundary, Hayfields Farm shares over a mile boundary with the Highland Wildlife Management Area (Bullpasture Mountain tract), which is owned and managed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. With such proximity, the potential for coordinated conservation efforts at and around Hayfields Farm is nearly as inspiring as the views.

In 2017 VOF received the Hayfields Farm property in Highland County as substitute land from the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, LLC and Dominion Transmission, Inc. to satisfy statutory requirements associated with the development of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline through nine open-space easements held by VOF in western Virginia.
